Bessel van der Kolk
I have a particular interest working with people with complex and persisting issues and/ or unexplained symptoms who haven't found much help so far. Conditions include but aren't limited to:
These conditions may be particularly prevalent in those who have experienced chronic stress and/ or trauma.
I also enjoy working with people who want a better understanding of and relationship with their body and/ or who want to move with greater ease.
I offer a holistic and integrative Physiotherapy service that is person-centred, trauma-informed and grounded in neuroscience. I consider each person’s symptoms and experiences through a biopsychosocial, developmental and neurobiological lens. I am informed by scientific theories and evidence-based approaches and interventions including:
We all have rich and complex inner worlds that contribute to our experience of bodily symptoms and this is governed by the nervous system. With this in mind, I treat the whole person, rather than just focussing on symptoms. I consider the interplay between biological, psychological and social factors, in the context of individual neurobiology and development.
To do this, I weave together clinical Physiotherapy skills, scientific research and experience within a holistic framework. By addressing various contributing factors, I gently guide people toward a changed experience and reduction of their symptoms. Intervention is slow, graded, and set at the pace of the individual to allow for physiological nervous system reorganisation and integration in a way that is not overwhelming for the system.
I work uniquely and compassionately with each person. I take time to get to know my clients beyond presenting symptoms, while building a supportive and safe therapeutic relationship that serves as a holding space as strength and capacity is built.
